Fedco Seeds. OP. Native origin. Though widely grown in Maine 80 years ago, it almost became extinct. LeRoy Souther, of Maine, maintained it over 30 years and brought seeds to John Navaziolate 1980s, who reintroduced it to commerce through Garden City Seeds. After ripening in storage, 3–5 lb fruit turns bright orange, signaling ripeness. Makes incomparable pies. Vines display enormous vigor & astonishing yields. Can keep all winter stored at 50°. Germinates poorly in cold soil. Immature fruit make tasty “summer” squash.
Companion plants: Corn, Pole Beans, Radish, Tomato, Marigold, Nasturtium, Oregano, Calendula. 
Far from: Beets, Carrot, Turnip, Onion, Potato, Sweet Potato, Rutabaga, Brassicas, Cucurbits.
Planting tip: Soak in warm water up to 24H & scarify for improved germination. Best started inside 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Can also direct-seed after the last frost.
Harvesting tip: Mature fruit have a rich color & rinds that are hard to dent with a fingernail. Also, the ground spot gets riper in color (yellow to cream, gold to orange). Cut 2” stem to avoid rot from the stem. Must cure in dry and warm place.
Storage tip: Store at 10-12°C w/ 55-75% humidity & good air circulation.

Fedco Seeds. OP. D’origine autochtone. Bien que largement cultivée dans le Maine il y a 80 ans, elle a failli disparaître. LeRoy Souther, du Maine, l’a maintenue pendant 30 ans et a apporté des graines à John Navazio à la fin des années 1980, qui l’a réintroduite dans le commerce par le biais de Garden City Seeds. Après avoir mûri en entrepôt, les fruits de 3-5 lb deviennent orange vif, signalant leur maturité. Fait des tartes incomparables. Les vignes affichent une énorme vigueur et des rendements étonnants. Peut être conservé tout l’hiver à 50°. Germe mal dans un sol froid. Fruits immatures font de savoureuses courges d’été.
Plantes compagnes: Maïs, haricots grimpants, radis, tomate, tagète, capucine, origan, calendule.
Loin de: Betterave, carotte, navet, oignon, patate, patate douce, rutabaga, brassicas, cucurbitacées.
Ensemencement: Tremper en eau chaude jusqu’à 24H et scarifier pour pour mieux germer. Préférable de commencer à l’intérieur 3-4 sem. avant le dernier gel. Peut aussi semer directement après le dernier gel.
Récolte: Les fruits mûrs ont une couleur riche et une écorce difficile à creuser avec l’ongle. De plus, la couleur de la tache au sol devient plus mûre (jaune à crème, or à orange). Couper 2″ de tige pour éviter la pourriture par la tige. Doit mûrir dans un endroit sec et chaud.
Entreposage: Stocker à 10-12°C avec 55-75% d’humidité et une bonne circulation d’air.
